  • The Adverse Effects Of Infidelity

    Published July 18th, 2008
    by Alex Archer

The family unit is considered an ideal institution. A married man and woman, and their children, are the gold standard of a family. Couples in a loving married relationship can enjoy a fulfilling family life with their children. Infidelity, however, can upset the dynamics of a family unit.

What is infidelity? It is a violation of the mutually agreed-upon rules of a relationship and a breach of faith in an inter-personal relationship. We often mean infidelity to sexual infidelity in marriage. It may be called as adultery or cheating. Infidelity can cause total damage to the family.

The impact of infidelity on the family unit is devastating. the affected partner, upon discovering the affair, often experiences a variety of emotions including rejection, shock, anger, disappointment, and pain. The intensity of these feelings may be so severe that the affected partner finds they have ineffective coping mechanisms.

The affected partner immediately wants to quit the relationship. Mostly he/she cannot forgive the cheating partner. Women try to forgive the cheating husbands if the husbands repent the mistakes and promise to quit the illegal affair. Some women cannot leave their husbands as they love them so much and they want to give their husbands another chance to live a faithful married life with them.

Sometimes, however, the wounds from an illicit affair can run so deep that it can destroy a relationship. The affected partner may opt for separation or divorce, thereby breaking up the family and causing severe suffering for all members. Sadly, children who have had nothing to do with the incident are swept up in the after-effects.

Family harmony becomes non-existent as frequent quarrels between spouses occur, sometimes escalating beyond emotional wounding to physical assault. Children who must live in this environment feel deep emotional pain and insecurity when they experience an intense fight between their parents.

The effects of infidelity on family are obviously reflected on the life of the children. The children want to live peacefully with their parents. They need both the father and the mother. They want to live with both of them in a same house. When the couple opts for a divorce or separation the children, it affects the children psychologically. They feel tensed and unsecured.

The effects of infidelity on family are very large. The husband and wife may start to live separately: children have to live with either the father or the mother. They will miss a parent and the love given by him/her. A life without both the parents is not a complete one for the children especially when they are young. The separation brings a bad name for the couple in the society as well.
